Our French neighbour Jacques, just purchased a second hand Catana 50, after 10 years of owning a lagoon 47. I asked him if he had any experience of high drama in either this new boat or his previous Lagoon. His answer was fascinating and he gave me two occasions that he will never forget.

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

This is his story, “4 years ago I left Canet en Rousillon France, the weather forecast was for 45 knot winds which I thought would be ok. Once I was out the winds quickly changed from 45 knots to 60 to 65 knot winds. I was on my own and I realised I had made a mistake in not staying in harbour until the bad weather passed.
This was not a pleasurable trip. You are very, small in the sea. The power of the sea has no limit unlike your boat. At this time it was an equation of boat against sea. The fastest my lagoon reached in speed was 22 knots as I surfed down the waves. There was no pleasure in this journey, I can assure you”

The master is the sea.

“Another time I also make a mistake. I had sailed through Gibraltar, I was tired and on my own. I was sailing continuously trying to get home, I needed to have some sleep on the passage. There is no security when you sleep and I went to sleep for one hour.”

“I awoke with alarms and beeping happening from my auto pilot. I had slept for 3 hours. After a couple of minutes I worked out what had happened. I am on the beach. My motors are out of the water and from the beach I could see the lights of the nearby city. There was no wind and I had to think of how I was going to get myself out of this situation. At this point I think today is my lucky day. On either side there is rocks and danger everywhere, but my boat it finds the sand.”

“This day was my day. I was able to think of a solution to get the boat back in the water. I raised the genoa and there was a little wind which helped move my boat to the side, so my port motor was now in the water. This allowed me to push the boat back a little and get my starboard motor in the water”. There was no damage. Amazing.

“I am Catholic but not practicing you understand. On this day I went and bought a big candle and said my prayers of thanks. I was lucky”
